Environmental Protection

Ever since its inception, the Literates Welfare Association has been committed in fostering environmental conservation and strengthening the local agri-biodiversity resources within Theni district. This includes conservation and development of land, water, soil and life support systems such as river and village woodlands. We also address, in consultation with the civil society institutions and the local communities, issues pertinent to Climate Change. The Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu, for example, designated our Organization as the District Coordinating NGO for formation and strengthening of School Eco-Clubs. For up to 2011, our achievements in this sector cover the accomplishment of

  • More than 30,000 saplings of tree were planted in the Tsunami affected coastal areas in Nagapattinam under the Coastal Eco-System Conservation programme involving planting of trees and bio-shields;
  • 300 Eco-Clubs promoted in 300 schools in Theni District;
  • School children in these schools were sensitized on Environmental conservation and protection;
  • Entire Palani Murugan Temple covered under Clean Temple Programme;
